The Shard 5th Anniversary

The Shard, London, UK

The Shard, London, UK

Did you realise that The Shard in London is already 5 years old? It was inaugurated in 2012 after a 3-year construction period.

It stands 310 metres high, and it’s glass facade and pyramid shape dramatically changes the London skyline.

Renzio Piano, who designed The Shard, took inspiration from tall English Gothic churches and ship masts. With that in mind, have a look at our HD aerial footage – what do you think?

Jane Austen Remembered on Bicentennial of Death

Jane Austen Remembered Bicentennial

Jane Austen Remembered

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death. Today she is one of the most highly celebrated English novelists – but she published anonymously and so was relatively unknown in her own lifetime.

We had a look through our HD aerial collection and found a few interesting locations that relate to her life and work….

Chatsworth Estate and House – The Pemberley Estate in the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Kiera Knightly. Chatsworth is also explicitly mentioned in Austen’s novel…

The Cobb at Lyme Regis – a key setting in her final novel, Persuasion. Austen visited here in real life on at least two occasions…

Winchester Cathedral – Jane Austen’s final resting place, and where you can visit her memorial plaque and window…

20th Anniversary of Scottish Parliament

20th anniversary scottish parliament

20th Anniversary of Scottish Parliament

In 1997 Scotland voted in favour of the creation of a devolved Scottish Parliament with its own powers within the United Kingdom. This year is the 20th anniversary of that decision.

Then began the planning and building of the Scottish Parliament Building in Holyrood, Edinburgh. Catalan architect Enric Miralles designed the striking postmodern building, which was completed in 2004.

Scottish Parliament had previously ended with the Treaty of Union between Scotland and England in 1707, creating the Parliament of Great Britain located at Westminster Palace in London.

The Scottish Parliament Building could be viewed practically and symbolically as Scottish political affairs being relocated back to Scotland. Here is a clip for our HD aerial collection of building –

150 Years Since Royal Albert Hall Foundation Stone Placed by Queen

Queen Victoria Laid Royal Albert Hall Foundation Stone

Queen Victoria Laid Royal Albert Hall Foundation Stone

In Victorian England 150 years ago, Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone for a new building that is now an iconic cultural centre for music and performance. She named it the Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences in honour of her husband, Prince Albert, who conceived the idea but died before it was realised.

The circular Grade I listed building with it’s iron and glass dome, situated in South Kensington in London will be familiar to many – as will the famous events it hosts, such as the BBC Proms, Cirque du Soleil, and live classical and film music orchestral performances.

The Hall wasn’t completed until 1871, so it’s official 150th celebration will be in 2021.

JFK’s 100th Birthday

JFK's 100th Birthday

JFK’s 100th Birthday

This year marks JFK’s 100th birthday, had he lived. John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States of America.

The Kennedy family are a fascinating part of a American history and politics, and their story has most recently been portrayed on the big screen in ‘Jackie’, a feature film focusing on the First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9pW3B8Ycc4

The film is structured around an interview that Jackie held with a Life magazine reporter at the Kennedy family compound at Hyannis Port after JFK was assassinated. Below is an HD aerial of the Kennedy Compound from our collection.

It was a home of JFK, his parents and his siblings, as he was growing up. After JFK was elected, it became his presidential retreat. The compound is now a National Historic Landmark.
