150 Years Since Royal Albert Hall Foundation Stone Placed by Queen

Queen Victoria Laid Royal Albert Hall Foundation Stone

Queen Victoria Laid Royal Albert Hall Foundation Stone

In Victorian England 150 years ago, Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone for a new building that is now an iconic cultural centre for music and performance. She named it the Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences in honour of her husband, Prince Albert, who conceived the idea but died before it was realised.

The circular Grade I listed building with it’s iron and glass dome, situated in South Kensington in London will be familiar to many – as will the famous events it hosts, such as the BBC Proms, Cirque du Soleil, and live classical and film music orchestral performances.

The Hall wasn’t completed until 1871, so it’s official 150th celebration will be in 2021.

JFK’s 100th Birthday

JFK's 100th Birthday

JFK’s 100th Birthday

This year marks JFK’s 100th birthday, had he lived. John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States of America.

The Kennedy family are a fascinating part of a American history and politics, and their story has most recently been portrayed on the big screen in ‘Jackie’, a feature film focusing on the First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9pW3B8Ycc4

The film is structured around an interview that Jackie held with a Life magazine reporter at the Kennedy family compound at Hyannis Port after JFK was assassinated. Below is an HD aerial of the Kennedy Compound from our collection.

It was a home of JFK, his parents and his siblings, as he was growing up. After JFK was elected, it became his presidential retreat. The compound is now a National Historic Landmark.

130 Years of Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes Anniversary

Sherlock Holmes Anniversary

The BBC’s latest iteration of Sherlock Holmes, as portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, has been a resounding success with viewers. The show has been praised for – amongst other things – it’s innovative storytelling (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfFgnJoLiQE Note: Spoilers).

But as we all know, the eccentric detective has been reincarnated many times since Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle first brought him to life in the story ‘A Study In Scarlet’ in 1887 – making Sherlock 130 years old this year.

In fact, Conan Doyle himself was the first to bring his own creation back to life in 1903, after killing Sherlock off in 1893. In the story ‘The Final Problem’, Sherlock falls to his death (or so it seems) in a battle with his nemesis, Moriarty, at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland.

That waterfall exists in real life and here it is in our HD aerial archive –

20th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s new Globe Theatre

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre 20th Year

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre 20th Year

In 1997, after more than a 300-year absence, the iconic Globe Theatre was rebuilt and it’s doors reopened, bringing a piece of Shakespeare’s London into the modern world.

The old Globe (already a 2nd iteration after the original burned down) was demolished after theatres were ordered to be closed in 1642.

The theatre exists today thanks to American actor Sam Wanamaker, whose vision it was to recreate the Globe as faithfully as possible: and not only that, but also to adhere to 16th century construction techniques.

This year, the Globe Theatre celebrates its 20th anniversary. Here’s our HD aerial footage of the unmistakable exterior:

Are You Missing HBO’s Westworld?

Anticipating Westworld Season 2

Anticipating Westworld Season 2

Season 1 of Westworld, HBO’s Sci-Fi Western, was a huge success with both fans and critics alike.

We at Skyworks were fascinated by the the harsh and dramatic wild west landscapes that gave the story it’s distinctive atmosphere. And of course the irony is that every inch of that landscape, from the endless scrubs to the rocky mesas, is one gigantic set, designed for the indulgence of wealthy thrill-seekers.

The bad news for us fans is that season 2 will not be with us until 2018. In the meantime, why not indulge in our very real Westworld-esque HD aerial footage –
